The Most Frequent Lie In A Hospital: It Won’t Hurt! But, It’s Totally Worth It!!

Excitement bubbled through our hearts when we were first informed of an educational trip to Goa Medical College (GMC). Everyone was filled with enthusiasm and eagerness.

Finally, ‘the’ day arrived! We visited goa medical college on 28th of march 2019 from 1pm to 5 pm. The trip was quite a formal one and we were guided by Dr. Pramila Da Rocha and Dr. Vanita Da Silva. As we entered we were given a brief talk on the MBBS course at GMC with various subjects involved, the curriculum etc. We were taken around the corridors and the lecture halls of the college, the study areas open areas etc. We then went to the dissection room where we first saw an open hall where cadavers were ready for dissection followed by which we saw various internal organs like the brain, heart, lungs, stomach , limbs etc. at this point of time the students were unable to contain their excitement as the diagrams we have drawn in our notebook, the theory we all mugged up seemed to take shape !.we got an insight into the structures, colours, sizes and shapes of these organs.

From here we were taken to a laboratory, where slides were being prepared and studied. We were even allowed to view a slide under a microscope showing the various blood vessels, Muscle fibres, tissue elements etc, We then went to the biochemistry lab and got to see a lot of chemicals and reagents, which proved to us that the various subjects we study actually go hand in hand .we were briefed about the subject of pathology.

The visit to the museum turned out to be like the oil added to fire, the fire being the thrill in the hearts of students. There were numerous preserved specimens of organs with some disorders. There were cases of some of the rarest diseases as well as the common ones, we got to see how various organs can be affected by simply enlarging, as in Splenomegaly, as well as being affected by benign and malignant carcinomas (cancer). We saw some foetal defects ,like anencephaly (foetus without a brain ), disproportionate growth , and many specimens of conjoint twins.

Attending one of the medical classes was another great event. We entered the lecture hall where the presentations were being shown and a questionnaire was going on. We stayed there for a few minutes.

We were taken to the radiation block where we saw the CT scan machine. The doctor briefed us about CT scan, difference between CT and MRI etc and we also got to see a ct scanned video of the abdomen.
We visited other blocks like the department of toxicology, forensics and the mortuary.

Our last destinations was the cardiac department where we met Dr. Guruprasad Naik. He briefed us about the surgical procedures on the heart like angioplasty and by- pass surgery and showed us contrast scanned videos of angioplasty and other operations.
The trip to GMC was truly a memorable event, It was informative giving the students got an insight into various career options in the field of medicine.

On behalf of all the Faculty members who accompanied us (Venetia Maam, Dilip Sir & Aditya Sir ) and all the students, a very big thank you to VPD Sir for arranging this visit!
