YOU CAN’T SKIP A BEAT!
The morning of 7th February 2018 was a privileged one for the students of STD XI, Mushtifund Aryaan Higher Secondary School, especially for the medical aspirants as the guest lecture was to be delivered by the highly eminent cardiologist, Dr. Guruprasad Naik. Dr. Naik was warmly welcomed by the Director of the Institute, Mr. Vyankatesh Prabhudesai and was formally introduced to the students by the faculty for Biology,Mrs. Venetia Fernandes.
Dr. Naik is an alumnus of Goa Medical College and has brought immense pride to our State by winning several laurels, the highest one as stated being his Fellowship in Cardiology from the Louisiana State University Medical Centre at American College of Cardiologists.
Presently, he is holding the prestigious post of the Head of the Department of Cardiology at Goa Medical College and has over 20 years of experience in treating Cardio- Vascular diseases.
He initiated the lecture by highlighting on the various cardio vascular diseases, conditions and treatments by making a beautiful visual presentation for better understanding. He shared some amazing videos on angioplasty, by-pass surgery and a few other latest surgical techniques in the field of cardiology. The students listened attentively as Dr. Naik explained to them how “plaques” were formed and how with fast advancing technology these can be removed. What interested the students the most was an intriguing video on the angioplasty procedure and an how an umbrella like device was used to treat leaks in the heart.
Dr. Naik emphasized on the ill effects of tobacco and smoking and how these vicious habits can lead to the blockage of ones arteries which trigger a heart attack and eventually death… He warned the young students not to fall prey to such vices and cited cases wherein the teenagers had contracted cardio – vascular diseases at a very early age! He stressed on the importance of inculcating a habit of working on ones fitness on a regular basis…
The interaction came to a closure with the much awaited Question and Answer session which was coordinated entirely by the Director, Mr. Vyankatesh Prabhudesai. The curious students asked several queries which the Noble Doc answered with ease and enthusiasm.. He guided them on the scope of Cardiology in India and Abroad and highlighted procedure for applying for Fellowship. The students found the interactive talk with Dr. Naik highly interesting and motivating and the knowledge they gained on the various advanced aspects in the field of Cardiology, was really impactful!
