
“BRAINY” DAY
The morning of 12th July was quite a pleasant one for the students of Mushtifund Aryaan Higher Secondary School (STD XI batch) as it marked a surprise and delightful visit from Dr. Ponraj Sundaram , Goa’s most reputed Neurosurgeon. Dr. Ponraj was warmly welcomed by the Director, Mr. Vyankatesh Prabhudesai and was formally introduced by Mr. MBS Kakodkar, administrative officer.
Dr. Ponraj has been an alumnus of the most prestigious medical Institutions in the country NIMHANS and JIPMER. The head of the Nuerosurgeon department at GMC completely electrified the young minds with his hands on experience in dealing with life and death on a daily basis. “ It is The Most rewarding service or profession anyone can be in”, said the humble Doc.
Connecting with relevance to the students, Dr. Ponraj highlighted the pros the cons of the various specialisations and their scope in the medical field. He also pointed out that being a Doctor is no 9.00 to 5.00 job, it is a service which one does everyday and at any hour. Speaking of the surgeries, Dr. Ponraj told the students to that it is the Steady hands, a calm mind, wide range of current facts and developments in the field and quick analysing power which helps the patient to trust the doctor. Dr.Ponraj deals with near death cases often and he said that it is of prime importance and the Doctor’s duty to motivate and ask the patient to have a positive outlook even if the chances of survival of the patient are grim. One must be polite and sensitive towards the feelings of every patient in order to build the trust.
Dr.Ponraj also threw light on the fact that the competition for the medical seats has gone up manifold. The students should be aware of the importance of being a doctor because the old anecdote “ An Apple a day keeps the Doctor away “ is nowadays a bygone…. Speaking particularly of his field of Nuerosurgery in Goa, Doctor emphasized that around 70 – 80 students compete for only a meagre 2 seats! So it is very important to know and understand the importance of the field of specialisation every medical aspirant is choosing.
The interaction was concluded with the Question and Answer Session which was entirely coordinated by the Director. The Dr. Ponraj answered queries regarding his the experience of his first operation , his daily schedule and many other subject related questions very enthusiastically. The students heard the noble Doc in rapt attention and were grateful to him for visiting them and sharing the views, facts and experiences of his profession.
