Aryaans Institute organized a prestigious online guest lecture on Sunday, 28th December, featuring Vice Admiral Dr. Arti Sarin, AVSM, VSM, the first woman officer in Indian history to serve as the Director General of Armed Forces Medical Services.
During the lecture, Vice Admiral Dr. Sarin emphasized the importance of choosing a career through honest self assessment, understanding one’s interests and strengths, and gaining practical exposure through internships before making long term professional decisions. She elaborated on the true meaning of service in uniform, highlighting its critical role in nation building, discipline, responsibility, and the safeguarding of national security, and explained that a career in the Armed Forces is not merely a profession but a way of life. She shared a four point mantra for professional excellence which included working hard, maintaining integrity, continuously learning and upgrading one’s skills, and striving to be good at one’s job, stressing that these values form the foundation of credible leadership in any field.
Ma’am also spoke about the growing role of technology in modern military operations and briefly explained opportunities such as the Short Service Commission, which allows individuals to serve the nation for a defined period while gaining valuable professional and leadership experience. She further highlighted how service in the Armed Forces instills enduring qualities such as self awareness, civility, discipline, time management, humility, empathy, and ethical conduct which remain relevant across all professions and industries.
Through her personal experiences, she demonstrated how rigorous training and discipline help in overcoming challenges with resilience and confidence, including her inspiring account of sailing aboard INSV Bulbul from Kochi to Lakshadweep in 2020, a demanding three and a half day journey that reflected courage, teamwork, and leadership in action. She concluded the session by encouraging students to choose careers that challenge them, foster growth, and align with their values, emphasizing that the Armed Forces offer a unique path where professional excellence and national service coexist. The lecture was highly informative, motivating, and impactful, leaving students inspired to strive for excellence, integrity, and purposeful service in their future endeavors.
