Mr. Karthik Mahesh  BTech ( IIT Bombay), MS University of Illinois at Urbana champagne, USA, Currently working as systems safety engineer at Cirrus aircraft USA, held an engaging and insightful session for the students and staff of MAHSS on 9/11/2025

Mr. Karthik spoke about his journey from his early JEE preparation days, where
Rotational Mechanics and Electric Potentials were his favourite topics in physics. These interests laid the foundation for his passion for aerospace engineering, especially aerodynamics. Later, at IIT Bombay, when he instinctively rattled off a formula in response to a professor’s question — he realised that true mastery comes not from rote memorization, but from conceptual understanding.

He spoke about how he built a wind tunnel for 11 grade science project. This passion for
aerodynamics carried on leading to him developing his research project which in turn broke lifting line theory. He also became the Convener of the Aeromodelling Club at IIT Bombay.
The video on Electra Aero’s ultra-short runway concept was fascinating: by using electric motors to blow air over the wings, they m

assively boost lift thus enabling take-offs and landings in as little as 150 feet.
In his talk, Mr. Karthik advised us to plan for challenges and setbacks. We all have our
weaknesses, but with proper planning, we can work around them. Improvement doesn’t happen at the last minute — it must be built gradually and consistently. We must practice until it becomes second nature.

He explained the importance of setting clear priorities , coming in with a well-thought-out plan, and developing the ability to learn quickly. In a fast-changing world, he emphasized that success depends not just on what we know, but on how effectively we can adapt, absorb new knowledge, and apply it in real time.

Mr. Karthik emphasized being curious is a powerful advantage and encouraged us to be self- starters. There’s so much that’s exciting and worth learning, but it won’t come to us on its own — we have to go out and seek it.

He highlighted the importance of having a plan and actively pursuing one’s passions. He shared how he once approached Professor Pant, asking to be involved in developing content for an upcoming course — an experience through which he deepened his understanding of how lift is generated. Interestingly, this fundamental question continues to challenge aerodynamicists even today, with new research papers still being published on the topic.
He spoke about his journey at Boeing, sharing insights from his interview and internship
experiences there. He emphasized the value of exploring courses beyond one’s core field, as the knowledge gained from different disciplines can greatly enhance understanding and performance in your main area of study.

Mr. Karthik’s journey is truly inspiring and gave the students  the motivation to believe in themselves, change course where required and *keep on keeping on*….

The students thanked Mr. Karthik for sharing his invaluable wisdom and time and for answering all their questions patiently. The institute was honoured to have Prof. Pant join and interact with them in the session despite his busy travel commitments.

The students extended their deep appreciation to Mr. Vyankatesh Prabhudesai Sir for organising the wonderful session and giving them the opportunity to learn from such a distinguished guest.
