Recently we, the students of STD XI and XII of Mushtifund Aryaan Higher Secondary School ( MAHSS ) had the privilege to meet the leading physician in Goa, great orator , social activist and gold medallist in Medicine, Dr. Oscar Rebello. He says that now, he is also known as “Prateek’s Father”, who happens to be an ex student of MAHSS who was amazingly brilliant and talented and one of the finest in Academics as well as most well behaved students we ever had!
Speaking to all of us, Dr. Oscar, made us realise how lucky we are to be a part of this esteemed Institution where in we are trained under some of the most qualified and experienced people and he advised us to use this golden opportunity and make the most out it to achieve our goals !
Helping us to understand ourselves, Dr. Oscar categorized the students into poor, average, brilliant, highly brilliant and finally Genius. He asked us a question,” What lies above a Genius student?” And with several attempts made by students to answer this but all in vain, Dr. Oscar said , “ Happy Students.” Irrespective of what field we choose, we need to love what we do and success will eventually follow. And if during the course of our career, we realise that this is not meant to be, it is best we get ourselves out of it in time and do what gives us a sense of being…
Speaking specifically about the field of medicine from his years of experience as a renowned Doctor, he said that it is indeed a noble profession. Nothing can give u a ‘kick’ that you get after diagnosing a patient and saving a life. He told us it is a very challenging profession and every case is a new one! Even if you are not compassionate, eventually you do become compassionate , such is the power of this profession. From his personal experience, Dr. Oscar highlighted on our attitude towards life, saying that being in this field, we definitely begin to complain less and appreciate more after we see the sufferings of other patients of all ages , be it kids, teens, adults or old people.
Dr. Oscar aiming to guide the Medical aspirants, threw some light on the challenges in store for them being in this field. It is definitely a tough job physically for one, as it demands a 24/7 service. Every case is a mission and there is no scope for laziness to creep in as someone’s life is at stake … keeping all this mind, he stands by the fact that no other job will be give you an innate satisfaction as a Doctor gets after saving a life.
Dr. Oscar, helped us analyse our personalities by giving us the 3 major categories of Docotrs – the Thinkers, Doers and Visionaries. Speaking of the Thinkers, he said they are the detective types, who work their grey cells out and finally solve the case and kill the culprit ( the disease of course !! ). These kind of people can be good General Physicians. The Doers on the other hand, are arty , skilful people who can manage to do dissections and perform surgeries and also be able to stand the sight of blood and open cut bodies! And finally the Visionaries are the ones who go into the field of research but unfortunately, as the fact lies, very few opt for this. Cracking it down, he said, “ You either become Rich or you win the Nobel Prize” because no rich guy till date has won the Nobel prize.
The interesting interaction ended with the most awaited, Question and Answer session which was entirely coordinated by the Director of the Institute, Mr. Vyankatesh Prabhudesai. Dr. Oscar, enthusiastically answered all the queries and once again congratulated the students and our Director for the great results we have to our credit and assured us as students that being a part of the Aryaan Family, means we are in safe hands!
